Railo on the Rocks Keynote
Gert is kicking off the Railo keynote at Scotch on the Rocks.

Big announcement: Railo is going open source and joining with the JBoss project! It will be LGPL2.

Railo Enterprise will still exist and will contain the non-open source features such as video handling and PDF generation, as well as having support offered.

This is really great news. Don't you think Adobe is going to get some pressure to offer a open source version as well?

@Bruce, no I don't see that this has any bearing on Adobe's business model. Adobe provide a lot of "value add" by virtue of providing integrated functionality out-of-the-box that is based on non-open source (and often expensive) third-party components.

This is great news, but at the same time I am a little worried. I could see ColdFusion, Railo Community, and Open Bluedragon all trying to one-up each other in features (new tags, new functions, new attributes for each, etc.). Then we'd end up with a horrible mess of CFML servers that aren't compatible. Yuck! Hopefully, with things like OBD's steering committee, that won't happen.

One key drawback that makes Railo community a non-option for me: "only one datasource connection allowed" Definitely still useful for a lot of people, but I need multiple connections for all of my current projects.

@Eric, both Railo and the OpenBD team have stated that compatibility in the core language is a key goal. Both groups have talked about working together on a public standard definition of the core language.

Furthermore, both of these would be *community* projects so they will add what the *community* wants. They are not "independent" projects doing whatever they please, they are community-driven open source projects.

As for Railo Community Edition, Gert stated that it would be merged with Professional Edition and all restrictions would be lifted (and, since the source would be available, you could remove any restrictions yourself anyway).

I think that the CF community's lack of understanding of how open source projects work is driving this sort of fear, uncertainty and doubt. Both projects are being steered by people from the Java community who have a lot of experience with open source projects.

Good to meet you @ Scotch.

Just to let you know that as also announced in the keynote, Railo Enterprise will be distributed with FusionReactor AND FusionDebug! ( Railo already supports FusionReactor - http://www.fusion-reactor.com/ )

We're really excited about the Railo/JBoss collaboration and hope it will expand the reach of CFML into wider markets benefiting the whole community.
