Flash Player 8.5 Public Beta

March 16, 2006 · 2 Comments

Emmy Huang, Product Manager for Flash Player, just announced that Flash Player 8.5 is now in public beta. I'm just about to install it - I had not previously installed it because I wasn't using Flex 2 (because Flex Builder 2 is not yet available for the Mac and I haven't had time to set up the command line compiler and integration with Eclipse!). The focus of the public beta is to check compatibility with existing (legacy) Flash content. See Emmy's blog and the public beta page itself for more details.

You may want to hold off. Other postings are saying that this is a beta release versus the Alpha 3 release of the player that is part of Flexbuilder on the Labs. The labs demos apparently don't work right with the new player or aren't updated yet for Flexbuilder.

May be worth the short term wait until the next beta of Flexbuilder is out.

Yes, it's true that Flex 2 apps built with the current version of the labs tools do not run in the public beta of Flash Player 8.5. As Tom Jordahl said at cf.Objective(), expect a new labs drop 'soon'...
