Apple - AirPort Express

September 21, 2004 ·

I began to have problems with my year+ old D-Link WAP so I decided it was time to treat myself to a shiny new Apple AirPort Express. I just installed it. Which involved sticking an ethernet cable into it and plugging it into the wall. Bingo! Online. The cool stuff is being able to plug your stereo into it and play your iTunes library over WiFi and to wirelessly share a USB printer. And it's so small you can stick it in your pocket and take it wherever you go to create a wireless network... wish I'd had it at the Fusebox 2004 conference last weekend!

Thats the beauty of Apple... it just works. Congratulations. I'm using one for my XBox Live Account and it kicks ass.

I use my AirPort Express at hotels with great success. Why be tied to a hotel desk when I can work wherever I'm comfortable? I've even used it in certain chain hotels with "club" rooms on certain floors - plug in the Express in my room and head down the hall to enjoy snacks, a big screen TV, and wireless connectivity.

As I often present at customer locations with sales reps, and most conference rooms are wired with one cable (that's inevitably two feet shy of where you're sitting), I'll hook the cable up to my Express and the whole room can surf wirelessly.

I wonder how many AirPort Express devices we'll see at MAX this year? Since they can be repeaters for one another, will a group of enthusiasts get togther and wireless-enable their hotel floor? (smile)

I was totally looking into getting one of those babies! I often find myself out and about at a friends house who has broadband, but no wifi. Having one of those in my computer bag, would solve many a problem.

Actually it would just be so much fun and totally not something I need.

    But so much fun!
