Firefox 2.0 - First Thoughts
October 23, 2006 · 5 Comments
Firefox 2.0 is here. I'm running 1.5.0.7 and 2.0 side-by-side right now (although only one can actually be running at once) to see how I feel before I commit to upgrading. So far - an hour in - Firefox 2.0 feels very good. I like the subtle UI changes, the better organized preferences dialog and, most of all, the spell-checking on textarea form fields (although it doesn't know the word 'textarea'!).
I was disappointed that the Fusebox 5 reload extension is "not compatible" (strangely the Fusebox 4 reload extension is compatible - go figure!).

But FF2.... been using it for some time now. Its definitely lighter than FF1.5. I actually find it quite difficult going back to 1.5 now that I've got used to all the small UI changes. Very pleased with it.

The Nightly Tester Firefox extension will let you force non-compatible extensions to work with FF 2.0. I've been using it since the FF 1.5 beta and never had problem. You can get it here: http://users.blueprintit.co.uk/~dave/web/firefox/nightly

The Fusebox 5 reload extension "should" be compatible with FF2...at least it was detected as fine when I upgraded to FF2. I changed the compatibility info in the rdf files. Note, I'm a CF guy and the extension was just something I wanted to try. I'll upload a fresh copy...let me know if it still doesn't install for you. There is a newer format for the rdf file I could try, but as you noticed, the earlier FB4 extension is fine, and I made the same changes for the FB5 extension.
