Amazing CSS editing tool

January 16, 2008 · 13 Comments

The creative director at one of my clients just turned me onto CSSEdit. It has a really nice user interface for working with CSS but the really cool thing is that you can view any site in CSSEdit's built-in browser and then download and edit the CSS file live and see changes on the remote web page directly (without needing to actually modify the remote site). This is really useful for previewing how a site - any site - would look with different CSS applied, which is essentially for skinning (which I think is just going to get more and more important).

I've never done it myself, but I thought it was possible to do the same thing with Firebug?

Yeah, I think you can do something similar but CSSEdit is a much nicer editing environment than Firebug.

For an extra 20 dollars at https://www.macheist.com/buy/invite/75591 you can get 1Password, CoverSutra, ... and many others, plus they'll donate 1/4 of it to charity (you choose from a list they provide).

Disclosure: that's an affiliate link. I don't make any money from it though, I just get extra software. Feel free to remove the /buy/invite bit if you feel it's tacky of me to put it in there.

I bought it for CSSEdit and 1Password, but I'm looking forward to some of the others as well. I could have tried them out first, but I thought the first 2 apps were worth it anyway.

CSSEdit is bundled in this year's MAacHeist. Dunno if the other apps are appealing, but if you're going to pop for CSSEdit, you can get another 10 apps for $20. Worth a look...

Interestingly, this is available as part of this bundle for the next week (and no, I have no affiliation with them...I'm just thinking of picking up that bundle for CSSEdit and Snapz Pro X).

Well, this is a first for me. I've tried to download a piece of software but it won't run on my OS!

Yeah, I can't make up my mind whether any of the others are worth the extra $20 to me...

And, yes Sammy, that was tacky considering others posted an unadorned link :)

Ahh, well I thought it was worth a shot to see what the hidden software was. =)

I doubt I'd use LaunchBar since I'm more than happy with QuickSilver, but I'd like to know what the hidden app is.

In any case, hopefully you all will forgive my spammy faux pas. As I said though, I did buy the bundle anyway because I thought it was worth it - not just to spam you lot! =)

I'll second(or third) the MacHeist software bundle http://www.macheist.com . I got it for Cha-Ching & CSSEdit & Coversutra. I'll be giving SnapzPro to my sister (I already have a license).

I just spent a while looking at the other apps and I can't imagine using any of them (if I was going to buy the bundle I would have used your link just for your sheer cheek!).

Ah, CSSEdit. That and OmniGraffle are the two things that make me jealous of you Mac users...

I actually did just buy the bundle - using Sam's link! Sam - let me know what the mystery software is if you get it.

The <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/60">Web Developer Toolbar</a> for Firefox also allows you to edit CSS in realtime directly in Firefox. It does tons of other fun stuff too!
